How it Works

How Crime Stoppers works!

  1. A crime has been committed or is about to be committed, and you know something about it.
  2. Call CRIME STOPPERS at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). We do not have call-display or the *69 call return service.
  3. Your information will be taken in strict confidence. Your anonymity is guaranteed.
  4. You will be assigned a confidential code number.
  5. You will be asked to call back periodically to be updated on your tip. You will have to refer to your confidential code number.
  6. As of January 2009, you can alternatively submit an anonymous web tip, click on the Give a Tip icon on the left side of the page to proceed.
  7. If your tip leads to an arrest or a closed case, you will be eligible for a cash reward between $50 and $2,000.
  8. Instructions will be given on how to pick up your reward.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if the caller states he/she is a victim? If the caller states that he/she is a victim, the caller must report the crime to the police or a "Victim Services" program. A victim cannot report a crime to Crime Stoppers because the caller would be identified by the information and therefore lose his/her anonymity.

Is Crime Stoppers run by the Police? No. Although Crime Stoppers works closely with Police and government agencies, it is not a police program, nor is it funded by the police. A group of dedicated, concerned citizens make up the voluntary civilian Board of Directors and are responsible for all the decision-making and fundraising to promote awareness about the program and pay our callers for their valuable information. Crime Stoppers encourages people to call with any information about any crimes already committed, those about to occur, or the whereabouts of wanted persons. Crime Stoppers is a program that allows you, the citizen, to get involved in solving crime with no risk to yourself. You will never be asked your name or have to testify in court.

What does Crime Stoppers do with the information a caller gives? Crime Stoppers acts as a "middle man" and will forward the tip information to the appropriate police authorities. The police and Crime Stoppers will work hand-in-hand with the information, and the police will inform Crime Stoppers on how the case is progressing. Therefore, it is important for the caller to call back for an update on the case.

How much of a cash reward will the caller receive? If the information leads to an arrest or a closed case, the caller may be eligible for a cash reward. The reward is based on the type of crime, the accuracy of the information, the value of the seized drugs/property, and the number of charges laid. The Board of Directors will determine the reward amount. The reward will be between $50 and $2,000.

Does Crime Stoppers Work? The answer is quite simply yes. Since the start of Crime Stoppers, many calls have been received resulting in thousands of arrests and recovery of substantial amounts of property. Calls have included information about murder, robbery, rape, assaults, drugs and firearm offences.

The success of a Crime Stoppers program cannot be purely judged on statistics, however, other benefits have come to notice:

  • A greater awareness in the community that there is a crime problem.
  • A willingness by the community to fight back against crime if it is given the opportunity and motivation.
  • Improved relationships between police, media, and the community.

Crime Stoppers is definitely here to stay. It has been accepted by police as a valid and effective investigative tool and the public, through its overwhelming response, appears to have accepted it as a more palatable alternative to traditional methods of giving information.
